Mission of the arboretum
The collection of tree species in the Arboretum in Kostelec nad Černými lesy focuses on relevant taxons of the temperate and boreal zones of the northern hemisphere. Over the course of years, we added shrubs and ornamental taxons to the traditional assortment of commercial tree species. Trees and bushes are planted in accordance with their ecological requirements and make a natural park. We highly value our generic collections of Abies, Viburnum and others.
Roles of the Arboretum:
Didactical – it is an ideal place for students to hold practical dendrology classes, collect their herbarium specimens and choose the topics of their bachelor and diploma theses. Scientific – the Arboretum allows monitoring of the introduced species growth, carrying out propagation experiments, producing forest seeds, breeding forest tree species etc.; it is an outstanding gene pool of tree species. Dendrological – there is a wide collection of tree species.
Infotainment – the Arboretum helps popularization of dendrology among the general public.
