The unique laboratory of ergonomic studies is used to teach students across disciplines offered at FLD. This is a unique workplace with state-of-the-art equipment, thanks to which students learn not only safety and handling of weapons, but also the importance of properly adjusting the stock of a long firearm. Several bachelor's theses have already been written in this laboratory, from a study of the effect of stock setting on shooting accuracy, to a topic dealing with the effect on shooting accuracy when shooting in different cardinal directions.
The main device in this laboratory is an electronic shooting simulator from the Swedish company Marksman, which is ranked among the best in the world. This shooting simulator is even used by several Olympic representatives around the world when preparing for world cups in shooting at clay targets. Thanks to this special equipment, students find out for themselves where and what mistakes they make when handling a long firearm, and subsequently eliminate these mistakes. They learn not only how to correctly aim at a moving target, but also how to hold the weapon correctly, adjust the stock for their own body parameters, and adopt safety habits when handling the weapon, aiming, and shooting.
The laboratory is also equipped with two types of eye trackers, which can be used when determining ergonomic parameters affecting shooting accuracy. The system that monitors the movement of various parts of the body, including tracking the movement and direction of eye gaze, represents a significantly innovative approach to monitoring the reactions of human body in connection with routine activities of everyday life. This pedagogical aid has led to a complete revolution in the teaching of subjects related to body ergonomics and tool ergonomics. Students thus have the opportunity to self-assess the use of their own products that they create as part of activities related to classes. They therefore have the opportunity to precisely define the appropriate shapes of wood products (for example, the stock of a long firearm) which they will subsequently design.
The laboratory focuses on teaching:
- modelling of special wooden products in connection with carpentry operations in the Pavilion of Wood Sciences,
- classes related to hunting, i.e. proper use of a weapon, setting conditions for humane game hunting, and safe use of a weapon in a profession.
Links to other subjects:
- Zoology
- Game anatomy
- Care for animals and the environment
- Hunting
- Shooting and ballistics
- Special wood production
Students who attend classes in this laboratory acquire practical habits and experience leading to humane care of animals and proper handling of weapons, which leads to a reduction in the risk of damage to health and property.
