Climate change affects Czech forests through risks involving more intense bark beetle outbreaks, gales, fires or drought. In this regard, # FLD is an essential partner of national and international projects that strive for sustainable forest management, preventing these risks. The #SUPERB project, supported by the #HORIZON 2020 program, is a flagship project in forest restoration.
Last week, the consortium of SUPERB got acquainted with the progress of the project's activities in the vicinity of Žďár nad Sázavou. FLD implements activities in cooperation with #Kinský Žďár a.s. Since its inception, the company has had solutions close to nature in its family tree thanks to the personal involvement of the owners, the Kinský family. Thus, in cooperation with scientists from FLD, Kinský Žďár a.s. Successfully established research and demonstration sites. The forest areas affected in recent years by both bark beetle calamity and storms have been restored within these sites. Careful and targeted natural and artificial renewal procedures help retain water in the landscape and, above all, enable a more varied and resistant structure of forest stands while maintaining their economic value.
The research also takes advantage of a unique site covered by a mixed old Central European forest at Žáková hora. The Kinský family declared protection over this area already in 1933. From the perspective of nature protection and scientific contribution, the place has been exceptional in providing robust data for several decades. Novadays, through the SUPERB project, also helps to connect practical and scientific knowledge that can be used for forest restoration and raise social awareness and support.
