Abstract
Using 16S rRNA metagenome data, Bourguignon et al. show that termite gut microbiota is shaped through ‘‘mixedmode’’ transmission, combining colonyto- offspring vertical transmission with occasional horizontal colony-to-colony transfer on timescales of tens of million years.
