Forest owners require greater guidance in adapting forest management to mitigate climate-induced changes. The EU-funded RESONATE project will help direct decision-making towards enhancing the resilience of forests and forest value chains in response to four resilience challenges. These challenges involve the changing suitability of tree species due to climate change, increased risks of forest disturbances, changing societal demand on forest products and ecosystem services, and a decline in biodiversity. Researchers will conduct an integrated resilience and vulnerability assessment to determine how past and current site factors and management influence forest system resilience in different forest types and management systems across Europe. In addition, foresight studies based on scenario analysis will be enhanced through engagement with stakeholders.
In the RESONATE project, led by the European Forestry Institute (EFI), FFWS is responsible for leadership of the case study on the biotic pests and its impacts. Together with the University of Graz, FFWS will manage the Durable Forest Value Chain work package in a situation of changing societal requirements.
Apart of this FFWS will also handle the tasks related to the introduction of new tools and teaching materials for university and post-graduate study programs related to the possibilities of increasing forest resilience. Last but not least FFWS will also contribute to several other tasks and work packages, especially in the areas of forestry, logging and logistics, forestry, natural disturbance management, ecosystem modelling, etc.
On behalf of FFWS, the project is coordinated by doc. Martin Jankovský from the Department of Forestry Technologies and Constructions where other colleagues across the departments will also take part in the implementation.
