Forests are the world’s largest and most important terrestrial ecosystems. Their role in preserving biodiversity and combatting global warming is therefore incontestable. The EU-funded CLIMB-FOREST project aims to strengthen the European forestry sector’s capacity to mitigate climate change. To that end, it will create a set of working packages centring on mapping current forest management and carbon sequestration in Europe and quantifying biogeochemical and biophysical processes in European forests. Moreover, it will create an innovative model of all relevant actors, encouraging knowledge transfer. Project outcomes will be disseminated across the entire forestry sector, aiming at a paradigm shift in the policymaking process and encouraging the adoption of new management strategies that will keep forests at the forefront of the green transition.
